Both genetic mutation and selection have recently been linked to the development of pale skin in European populations.
Researchers assume that when humans migrated out of Africa they evolved lighter skin as an adaptation to limited sunlight. Also, humans carried three genes associated with whiter skin which was favoured by natural selection.
