The poem makes allusions to two biblical figures: John the Baptist and Lazarus.

Prufrock says, "I have seen my head (grown slightly bald) brought in upon a platter." This is a reference to John the Baptist, who was beheaded. 

In the next stanza, Prufrock wonders if it would have been better if he were like Lazarus "come from the dead."
