The "Cross of Gold" speech was given by William Jennings Bryan in 1896 at the Democratic National Convention, where Bryan stated his support for "free silver" to bring prosperity to the nation. Inflation is when the purchase cost of goods and services rise, whereas deflation happens when those prices decrease. The Cross of Gold Speech was believed to bring about inflation for the economy.
