Thomas Paine like other colonists of the time questioned the British authority to rule the colonies in "Common Sense" because he believed that the British Government had overstepped its bounds and had committed tyrannical missteps in the governance of the colonies. Due to the overreach of the British, he felt it was necessary for the colonists to seek independence.
