In the story "Night Calls," what happens to the plan to find a mate for the bird is that it fails. They never manage to find a mate for the heron, which is why it is doomed to be alone and without a progeny of its own. Unfortunately, although people have tried really hard to find a mate for this bird, they didn't succeed and thus the bird was left alone.
