Biston betularia moth, commonly known as peppered moths, used to be predominantly white in color, before the industrial revolution. After the industrial revolution began, the soot from smoke was deposited on trees and the trees became black. The white moths were easy to spot by predators on black trees so the number of white moths decreased while that of black moths increased.
