When the English invaded the original thirteen colonies in America during the Revolutionary War of 1776, the French were allied with the Americans against the English, but only late in the four year conflict. Some say it was actually the French, under the Marquis du Lafayette, that defeated King George III of England, and not General George Washington of the newly formed United States of America.
