Answer:

The new student took a seat next to mine in math class. His demeanor was awkward, maybe because of his deference of not knowing anyone. I attempted to mollify him by smiling and saying hello. It was impromptu on my part because I am also shy. The look on his face was enigmatic, but I knew definitively that I made an attempt to help him feel better.
