Because for example if you owned 16 slaves, they could do more work for you. So if they picked lots of cotton for you, you'd have lots to sell. And lots to sell equals more profit.

Basically a simpler way of saying it is the more people you have for you that are working for you, you'll be able to produce more product which equals more money.
