Genetic engineering involves introducing traits into organisms to achieve desired results. The word "genetic" refers to anything related to genes, which are made up of DNA. By genetically engineering an organism, an engineer basically manipulates and modifies that organism's DNA to give it special traits that aren't normally part of its genome. Organisms that have been genetically engineered are known as Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
