In the period after World War 2, NATO (The North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and the Warsaw Pact faced off. In 1949, the US felt the need to organize something to stop the further expansion of communism. The Soviet Union, along with other supporters of communism, retaliated with the Warsaw Pact.
